Module 5 – Principles of Laparoscopic Suturing- Intracorporeal & Extracorporeal Techniques

Summary

Laparoscopic suturing is key element of advanced surgery. We have developed and teach a hierarchical system which breaks knot tying down into to a number of easily completed steps. These steps build on skills that have been learnt in previous modules. The understanding and repeated practice helps to acquire required skill to master this art. Intracorporeal knot tying is then combined with needle driving in models which attempt to build transferable skills. For example for Laparoscopic hysterectomy we have a vault closure model. Extracorporeal knots have also their place in securing the pedicles, vascular ligatures and closing the myometrium after myomectomy. In this module we also show case the extracorporeal knot and its clinical application.

Lectures

Schedule

This module helps in learning the laparoscopic suturing technique. The suturing is an accomplished form all the individual laparoscopic skills. It is also vital for performing advanced laparoscopic skills.

Laparoscopic Complication

Presentation which helps in learning to manage complications during laparoscopy. It is vital to understand the nature of problems so to avoid them in the first place. The lecture discusses all aspects of injuries including Bowel, vascular, bladder and entry related complications.

Lecturers

Amer Raza

Mr Raza is a Minimal Access Surgeon and Consultant Gynaecologist with specialist interest in minimal access surgery. He completed his specialty training in West midlands and London deanery. He worked in Birmingham Womens hospital and established number of laparoscopic courses including basic and advanced laparoscopic courses. Mr Raza later moved to London in Chelsea and Westminster hospital as a Fellow in Laparoscopic surgery.

He signed in for post-graduation in Advanced laparoscopic surgery in Surrey University. He successfully completed his postgraduate certification and later appointed as a consultant in Chelsea and Westminster hospital. He is now performing the major laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and hysterectomy.
