Primer – An Introduction to the CCMIG Modular Laparoscopic Course

Summary

The course is divided into 6 modules covering all aspects of Laparoscopic surgery within the RCOG core curriculum. The primer session will help trainees to understand the mechanics of course, introduction of equipment for simulation, assessments and the use of web resources. This will set the scene for their 4- 6 months training in Laparoscopic surgery.  This will also include a precourse assessment to allow the faculty to assess the baseline for training.

This is a practical interactive course needing good familiarity with all the equipment. The primer helps to understand the laparoscopic simulation box, using the electronic materials and checking the instruments. There is also a preoperative assessment to have the baseline.

Philosophy of the Course

This is a unique course, which helps in developing the neuro-motor skills of coordination and theoretical background for safe laparoscopy. This lecture is an aid to understand the expectations from this course

Course Curriculum

The modular course is based on the RCOG curriculum and this lecture helps to understand the requirements set out by the college for laparoscopic training. It is vital to build a good clinical foundation for laparoscopic surgery

Lecturers

Amer Raza

Mr Raza is a Minimal Access Surgeon and Consultant Gynaecologist with specialist interest in minimal access surgery. He completed his specialty training in West midlands and London deanery. He worked in Birmingham Womens hospital and established number of laparoscopic courses including basic and advanced laparoscopic courses. Mr Raza later moved to London in Chelsea and Westminster hospital as a Fellow in Laparoscopic surgery.

He signed in for post-graduation in Advanced laparoscopic surgery in Surrey University. He successfully completed his postgraduate certification and later appointed as a consultant in Chelsea and Westminster hospital. He is now performing the major laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and hysterectomy.

Mr Raza has taken keen interest in developing laparoscopic courses nationally and internationally. He has been on number of laparoscopic teaching faculties in Royal college of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, ICENI Centre UK, West midlands deanery and London. He teamed up with Mr Richardson in Chelsea and developed a series of modular laparoscopic courses over last 4 years. He is now working on various teaching and training programs to develop the online platforms for minimal access surgery education.

Mr Raza has also organized advanced laparoscopic courses in various countries including Pakistan and Iraq, which have been extremely successful. The current developments in online educational platforms will help to expand these courses to surgeons in developing countries.

Robert Richardson

Profile

In research, beyond personal projects, I have been involved in two National NIHR portfolio studies recruiting patients to evaluate treatment methods/management pathways in gynaecology. The OPT study has now closed and is in the writing phase. I am now lead investigator at Chelsea for the MEDAL study: MRI to Establish Diagnosis Against Laparoscopy. I aim to recruit between 50 and 70 patients and we are on track to achieve this.

I have been appointed as a Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, Imperial College in recognition of contributions to the Division.
